Butt Head Pedal Not Working Correctly

This is really helpful! It might be a day or two at this point before I can get back to the workbench, but I'll start by working through your suggestions here and post some results soon.

Butt Head Pedal Not Working Correctly

No worries! I'm definitely aware that this thread is getting out of hand. :) But yeah, I've rechecked all of the resistor values and cap values, and I've also tested all of the ones that can be tested while soldered to the board. If there's an issue with a component at this point, it's a problem...

Butt Head Pedal Not Working Correctly

Another update in addition to my last two response posts: I spent the last few hours at the workbench with two goals: first, to explore what might be going on around C8 and IC1.1, and, second, to probe the full audio path. On the first front, I started by reflowing C8, but that didn't change...

Butt Head Pedal Not Working Correctly

Yep, both legs of R10 have strong tone. C7 has no tone, but R11 has tone on one side. I'm not sure what that info would show, but that's what I found.

Butt Head Pedal Not Working Correctly

I did reflow everything after posting the pic, so that doesn't seem to be the issue as far as I can tell...

Butt Head Pedal Not Working Correctly

Update: I reflowed the solder on the J201 and I'm getting tone from legs 2 and 3 now, as well as tone through C3 and legs 1, 2, and 3 on IC2.1. The tone on leg 1 of IC2.1 is much louder than the previous test points, which I assume means IC2.1 is doing its job. I'm getting good tone from R10 as...

Butt Head Pedal Not Working Correctly

I had swapped them temporarily last week to see if it made a difference, but I put them back when it didn't. They're currently in the correct place according to the silk screening on the PCB itself.

Butt Head Pedal Not Working Correctly

Finally some possible progress! I started working through the circuit following the image @Feral Feline posted, and I got as far as the J201 transistor before hitting an issue. I don't know if it's THE issue, but I got tone through R2 and C2, but when I touch the probe to any of the three leads...

Butt Head Pedal Not Working Correctly

Both posts are helpful! Honestly, I have no idea how people figured this stuff out before internet forums existed. At least not in any timely fashion!

Butt Head Pedal Not Working Correctly

Thanks for the info! So, just to double-check, I can feed a random tone generator signal from my phone into the pedal for testing with the audio probe?

Butt Head Pedal Not Working Correctly

I really appreciate the thorough once-over! I'll double-check all of these when I get home this evening!

Butt Head Pedal Not Working Correctly

So I'm going to put together a down-and-dirty audio probe over the next few days, hopefully, to try to pinpoint where the issue is with this pedal. Two quick questions: first, can anyone point to a good "audio probing an effects pedal for dummies" resource? I did a search in the forum, but...

    REQUEST Double Muffin Fuzz

I saw that the Patron template works for the Double Muffin Fuzz, but I couldn't find a Tayda template for that one either. The offset switch hole has me leery of trying to tweak a more standard template. Anyone have a Tayda template for either the Double Muffin or the Patron? Thanks!

Butt Head Pedal Not Working Correctly

So just a quick check-in on today's troubleshooting: I went through the "Steps to Check Grounding" checklist I posted above, and everything checked out except that the backs of the pots didn't have any connection to ground. Would that be an issue? I tried it with the footswitch in both the on...

Butt Head Pedal Not Working Correctly

Yeah, I probably won't actually do that. :) I've been putting off the audio probe because I don't really understand what it is or how it works, but I'm thinking I've reached the point where it's time to learn a new skill...

Butt Head Pedal Not Working Correctly

I can definitely go in and check the caps. Heck, at this point, I might just pull all of the electrolytics and replace them, just to see what happens. I can also check the grounding for sure. Just because I haven't really gone hunting for a problem like this before, would this sequence root out...

Butt Head Pedal Not Working Correctly

No worries! I appreciate the advice either way! At least it gave me something new to look at for a bit. :)

Butt Head Pedal Not Working Correctly

Okay, so this has led to my first unexpected reading. IC1 and IC2 checked out fine based on the numbers you provided, but IC3 (the one in the middle on the PCB) had some odd readings on pins 5, 6, and 7. Instead of 4.5v like on the other two ICs, 5 was 0, and 6 and 7 were both about 8.5. 1-4 and...

Butt Head Pedal Not Working Correctly

Managed to get a better pic of the smd adapter: It looks right to me, but let me know if I'm missing anything!
