A question concerning cap types.

When i look at build info and schematics i'm having trouble determining what type of capacitor (other than electrolytic) is being referenced.

Is there a rules concerning cap type and where they are applied?

The boards themselves are a good visual reference. Build docs will call out specialty caps like MLCC power filtering caps.

Thanks Big Monk.

Coda, I was starting to notice this as a trend while shopping for capacitor assortments on the Zon.

Most nF values were film box and most pF values were ceramic. So monolithic are generally a specialty application?

This is really just about ordering the right stuff to build a small inventory. Don't want to buy the wrong stuff.

Thanks for the info and guidance.

Monolithic are Ceramics but much better quality because of how they're made. They are best in places where pf values are required and they are the best for power supply and IC decoupling.
And as another general rule of thumb, if audio passes through the cap, use plastic/mylar/box caps.

Thanks danfrank, i gotta start writing some of this stuff down...

Or maybe printing out the discussion threads...

Here's a couple of threads with additional points. You'll start to see a common theme.
As I'm building my own knowledge, I've found I can blindly follow @Chuck D. Bones recommendations if I don't want to take the time to better understand something.
