A Regulated Isolated 9vdc Power Supply Layout

Yup the design with that decade ladder was for ultra-sensitive digital hardware that went in an airplane, so it was running off 28V aircraft power which can be a bit unpredictable for noise. In a pedal power supply it would be absolute overkill and you likely wouldn't hear much of a difference. 100nF on each IC input (not just one at the beginning before it splits) is a good idea though.

Like this or...? if it's correct anything else to add for good measure, good practice or in general? anything you would change?

There is no point in using that 1N5817 diode on the input, it is only rated at 1 amp and you have a 5 amp supply feeding it.
you need a diode that can handle at least 5 amps or use a mosfet as a diode, the mosfet will have less voltage drop across it.

Nice catch. Didn't even occur to me. Fixed that one. thank you
 
Have to take ESR in elcaps into account as well as derating of mlccs, if you're getting real technical..
What does this mean and how do you go about it?
