Adventures in sourcing

Always out for ways to be different I have been searching for an alternative to standard LEDs for awhile.

I wanted to use marbles as a lens/jewel thing but even the smallest standard marbles are 5/8" which takes up way too much space inside the enclosure unless you are building a fuzz, or really simple PCB.

I came across some cool orangey-red mini marbles in a strange little store in Bonner Springs Kansas but only found about 5 little runt marbles that were not a standard item. besides, 99.9% of "marbles" have some swirly opaque element in them that i don't really like.

After literally a month and a half of scouring the amazon, ebay and etsy (just stay away from etsy if you are trying to retrace my steps unless you want to pay $25 per marble.)

I FINALLY found these 12mm Carnelian spheres (key is searching for "spheres" not "marbles" or "beads") that are wicked cool.....

I really want 12mm amber colored spheres, but all I could find were legit "Amber" spheres. Amber is much more rare than Carnelian and *sigh* nearly always has the encapsulated guts of some insect inside making it every more valuable, but kinda cringy as part of a guitar pedal IMHO.

I was about to punt and just make some half spheres of tinted epoxy resin before I found these.

So the decision was between A) manufacturing epoxy or B) hand mounting semi-precious stone spheres on my enclosures.

If you don't know how I decided B over A, you haven't gotten to know me very well yet...

Cheers.

You might be able to cut those super bouncy rubber balls in half and stick them over an LED... Then it might look like an Okko pedal. I've used skull badges over LEDs before, so the little skull's eyes glow when the pedal is on. You just cut the back off the badge.

But…. “Carnelian spheres” dude “Carnelian freaking spheres!!!””

I'm in SoCal, in the Be-e-a-utiful San Fernando Valley. Usually warm and dry winters, not so warm or dry this year. Snowed once in 1961, and again in 1962....

You may want to consider lamp jewels, typically found on Fender amps....

RU1…. I thought of all people at least you *sniff* would understand…

But you, I know, will stick with me and understand what took me nearly 60 years to understand. I love making unique, one of a kind, quintessential things… anyone can buy and amp jewel,,, but …… “0.031” 1.8% rosin Maiyum solder, point to point wiring, N.O.S. glass-shrouded Russian Germanium Diodes, hand polished genuine Hammond enclosure, acid etched original art, illuminated by a luminescent Carnelian sphere….” Holy shit, are you feeling the vibe????

Imagine if I could sell pedals festooned with “hand milled semi-precious luminous spheres, unique to each pedal in an ancient and arcane device from an undisclosed artisanal workshop in the San Fernando valley” heads would explode…

Those Carnelian spheres are mined in the same system as where the Corellian freighters are made, shipyards producing freighters such as the YT-1300f.

I think Carnelia and Corellia may even be sister planets...

That Carnelian sphere reminds me of that clown from Kamino, whas'is name, Bobo, Bobe...

That's the guy! Always playing some French-children's "fête".

I've got some spare amber amp-jewel light covers, I could mail you one in March...
