After building this one on perfboard a few months ago, I finally finished and received the enclosure to complete the build. Relatively happy with the appearance but the text doesn’t stand out as much as I’d like. Also the bottom left “Warning Contains Germanium” is hard to see. Overall good enough for personal use which is all that’s intended!
Circuit: Tortenmann TA-100 germanium overdrive.
Uses 3 PNP germanium transistors (used Toshiba 2SA478). Has a diode clipping section that after playing around with I went with 1N34A + 2N7000 mosfet on one side, and 1N4148 on the other side for asymmetric clipping.
Called Snakeoil because… Germanium lol
Controls:
Attack = gain
Bite = tone
Volume
Venom switch to engage boost
This drive really adds balls and thickness to already overdriven amps. It takes my Mesa Boogie Mark V to Rectifier territory. I will record some sound demos with SM57 hopefully today. For now have included some previous demos before the pedal was finished and just with phone recording.
