My gift/project was to replace a busted mini Tube Screamer for a meme-teen metal head. What better option than a Fortin modded TS? None more green. Comic Papyrus? Yes. Kermit flail? Absolutely. And he's getting a banjo for christmas? Also yes, but he's getting this first and I'm making him think it's the banjo.
My day job is printing pedals and making art for pedals so I get to show off in that aspect. My soldering is passable at best but I generally make things that function. And that brings us to me figuring out what I did wrong. I ran out of solder and was given some by one of my coworkers who assembles the PCBs of our pedals. It was some leftover pieces of solder we don't use anymore. And it sucks. It has a much higher melting temperature and looks like silver cottage cheese when it does melt. Don't cheap out on your solder is the lesson I was taught by this project.
What I have now is a fancy green box with some of my layout and print work, and a Mean Green Metal Machine PCB that will pass signal, the volume and tone pots work. Gain doesn't do anything audible. All the LEDs light up, when and how they are supposed to.
Tonight I'll clean up with some flux and braid, and reflow everything with better solder and I'll post an update tomorrow. Stay tuned for the adventures of an artist in an electric world.
