Animals Diamond Peak Boneyard mods PTP

Well looky here at what I made this evening with some sweet and massive mojo parts kindly gifted to me by @jwin615 that he acquired from a defunct police radio repair shop. Lots of crazy things like an N-D MOS (???), capacitors rolled in paper, and transistors I've never heard of. And very interesting capacitors featured right here.

Yup, it's a very functional breadboard of the Boneyard Animals Diamond Peak Overdrive in preparation to assemble Point to Point! A very rich and versatile overdrive with large range of tones.

I used a 4393 for Q1, a 5330 (no prefix?) NPN transistor with hfe of 39.8 in q2, and an mps2369 with hfe of 49.6 in Q3. I also tried a 5330 with hfe of 46.6, and metal can (no prefix) 6868 with hfe of 56.5, in Q3, but nah. Q3 seems to be tonemakker, and it likes the mps2369.

I'll fiddle with some of the values as suggested by Chuck, but it sounds pretty great as is.

Very amp-like and very responsive to/ expressive of guitar elements. Big range of gain from light edge of breakup to gainy clipping.

Can do tight chugs, can do doomy fuzzyness. The bass and treble knobs are key.

I think all dirt pedals should have a bass control and this one is an excellent example of why. I made a Skreddy Major OD as well and treated it in a similar way to this one. It's a very similar circuit. The Major OD has a slightly more Marshall flavour - well worth trying.

That sounds pretty rad. I will definitely check it out. Might be a while, though. I have a backlog of PTP projects:

Boneyard (BY) diamond peak, natch

Ok doomer (priority downgrade after breadboarding)
Nein fuzz
Moonn she Ra
Figbuster

BY fudge factory
BY tube Bender deluxe
BY hellbender
BY suburban decay maniac
BY the black box
BY germanium filter

Progress.

I didn't bother doing my blow-by-blow this time. This time I decided to build the whole circuit and then tie it in. It's basically a copy of the schematic as it's been a while and I wasn't feeling particularly ambitious. Ground rail is to the right, 9v rail to the left. Major tie ins are to bass and gain pots. Action between treble and volume is self contained and limited.

Well, it's done. I just can't level up past my amateur aesthetics. I guess I have to embrace the way of the blutac, because folks post some * popping * PTP pro circuits up on Reddit and are like,

"yeah, second circuit ever. Easy, but could have done better."

And I'm like Eff You, you (in my mind) super caj Gen Zer Dude, you don't know about old man hands struggle.

Had some issues with remembering how led wiring works, and forgetting to tie in the relevant parts of the gain pots to ground, which made it not work. Overall, predictable and stable, like a PTP should be. I'd say this is intermediate level. Not too many parts, but 4 knobs and some funky tie ins make it a moderate challenge.

My Q1 drain and Q3 collector voltages are in the ballpark of what Chuck specs, but my Q2-C is quite low. Not sure why. I may look to address it later. I don't have a référence point for the pedal, so some research is in order, but it do sound great.

Regardless, everything I said before remains true, and you can tune it well with the trimpot. A very large range from some dirt to verging on fuzz, very responsive to dynamics and pickups. Very amp like breakup. Very recommended. Thanks @Chuck D. Bones for yet again some great mods of great (and interesting) circuits. I sense a theme.

Haven't decided on a name yet, so I'll probably do a last report later with the front panel in final form.

Next up is the Germanium filter with Chuck mods.

Thank you much, folks. High praise from people who are actually making cool things happen in the circuit world, and notably @Erik S , whose impeccably immaculate wiring skills I can only hope to approach when I grow up.
