Anybody Use A Small T-Square?

Well that would sure beat the rafter square I usually use.
Yep I have a big ol Fairgate L-Square but it's super awkward to use - no recessed edge either

For any kind of layout work, I’d choose a combination square over a fixed t square.
Hmm yeah I've seen those mentioned... why is one better than the other? I love the under-desk pouch of Steve Martin's dental tools from Little Shop of Horrors btw...

Here are a couple reasons.

Possibly even creepier… that’s a dissection kit. I had it out because I needed a scalpel
Ha! I knew it! From the "Leatherface" signature collection...

That little combination square seems pretty perfect - what kind is it? I assume any halfway decent one (like this?) would do the trick, but that one looks very easy to adjust on the fly. Thanks for the tip, I can see where this would be more versatile than a static T-square.

That little Irwin looks good. A 6 incher in that style is super versatile.

The one in the video is a Starrett brand. That’s technically a double square, not a combination square. I’m sure someone on YouTube will complain. 🤣

The Starrett stuff is stupid expensive, but the old factory isn’t far from where I live, and a lot of it shows up at garage sales and estate sales around here for cheap.

The dissection kit is super murdery, but it comes in handy a weird amount.

I use a 12" Empire combination square for my drilling layouts. You can use it to make sure each pot hole is in alignment, and you can set it as a depth gauge and make sure they are centered and/or spaced evenly as well.

It would be nice if it had 32nd increments, but the 16ths are okay for what I do. I wrap the pedal in painters tape so the square doesn't damage the finish. It's more accurate than using a template and by taking my time I can do custom layouts pretty simply

Even though 6 inch is cute and feels right for a pedal, If I could only have one square it would be a 12 inch combination. You can do little stuff with a big square, but you can’t do big stuff with a little square.

Good point about the divisions. Most of my stuff is from brands that cater to machinists and are divided down to 1/64”. I think Irwin and empire make decent stuff, but if it’s made to be sold to carpenters it’ll be in 16ths.

I'd like to get a smaller one that slides better and is maybe a bit nicer and without a center detent, but buying tools is a slippery slope.

A super sharp pencil is my other favorite tool. These oversize ones are my favorite

Regular pencil can be hard to see on an enclosure.

Stabilo pencils are really nice for marking on aluminum, and other stuff:

I usually use a blue one, but any of the bright contrasting colors would be good. Easy to see, you can get a nice sharp point on them (unlike a grease pencil) and cleans off easily when you’re done.
