anyone from USA buy in EU? VAT?

trying to figure the whole "VAT" thing. Looking at an audio interface and software from thomannmusic and can't for the life of me figure out if there is "VAT" for US. I keep seeing if it's under somethign like $800 there is not tax. Anyone buy from EU?

I've of course bought form tayda but never EU.
 
We don't have to pay VAT in the US as that's essentially the equivalent of sales tax, but when you get above a certain dollar level (I've seen $500 and $800, depending on who you ask and apparently who the shipping carrier is) you will have to pay customs duties. Last year I made an absurdly large ($1200) PCB order from China and had to pay around $300 in customs duties.
