Australian and New Zealand Builders

Hey all - thought it would be fun to have a thread for Aussie and Kiwi builders so we can complain about overseas shipping and sourcing stuff locally.

Maybe even organise bulk buys or just conduct general antipodean pedal related chatter.

Here are the local stores/suppliers I am aware of

g'day 🤙

they may not be local, but entirely relevant to the plight of getting dry reamed for shipping:

sad to say, but tayda out competes every single one of those for price, availability, and shipping. (somehow shipping from thailand via DHL is always faster and cheaper than domestic australia post, even with 'express post' lmao)

mouser.com is great too - they'll do free shipping for orders >$60 and you're guaranteed genuine parts. element14 and digikey are quite similar in this regard.

Hello. I have nothing to add other than I am in the same boat.

Has anyone found a good place to buy germanium transistors in bulk? I was checking eBay buy shipping pushes the price up to $100 for a batch of 100. Not sure if it’s worth it or not.

With the caveat that I’m an American, you might want to look on AliExpress. The 3AX31C is a Chinese germanium transistor that I’ve used in a bunch of builds. Looking now, there are a few sellers offering batches of 100 for under $50 including shipping to Sydney.

I haven’t seen anywhere cheaper than that. Be a bit of a gamble, as they would possibly have already cherry picked the decent hfe range devices.

... not to mention that no Australian has ever posted on Facebook that the Wallabies have won the Bledisloe cup.... because the last time they had it Facebook wasn't even a thing. Just sayin'.

Anyway, back on topic: yes without Tayda and Mouser getting parts here would be completely unaffordable.
Sending stuff overseas to friends or buyers has become crazy expensive too. Unreal.
I still remember some years ago ordering transformers and speakers for tubeamps from the States and the shipping was kinda bearable; these days I couldn't send a flying fart for that.

How much are we talkin here for shipping? With my business account at the post office sending stuff to ANZA is the same as europe/japan/uk/etcetc

Stompbox parts costs 30 USD for shipping (and thats a for a few small components).

Aion is about 20 USD for shipping (which is a bit eye watering but acceptible)

PedalPCB is normally pretty good and comparible to domestic shipping. (11 USD).

And thats not even looking at shipping vinyl records from smaller labels/artists - those costs are enough to make baby jesus cry.

Fair, the aussie dollar and the canadian dollar are usually close to par and i get the same kinda rates which is wild until you consider standardizing it all on their end

anyway got any good gear stores that ship to canada or
doubtful. all of our shit is overpriced.

exhibit A:
Mark VII head. 7 grand.

exhibit B:
Les Paul Standard, 5.4 grand.

Out of curiousity how much is JLCPCB shipping to US or Canada? Its stupidly cheap to AU (as long as you are happy to wait 10 days).
