Cool little Ram's Head Muff with a mids knob.

Weston Grey enclosure from Stompbox Parts with UV printed sticker.

I had a hand full of NOS BC239Cs but I decided to use transistors that matched closer to the specs in the build doc. I think thats really what the originals biggest draw was the "rare" transistors. 2 are the BC239, the other 2 are whatever fit.

Either way, fun Muff to add to the massive DIY Muff collection.

Cool little Ram's Head Muff with a mids knob.

Great build, as always!

Are those knobs black? It might just be the lighting but they look kind of silver. Good look, either way.

So how does the mids control work? I feel like the mid-scoop of the Big Muff is core to its sound… but it’s also the Achilles heel when it comes to fitting in a band mix. At least that’s been my experience. Needs massive volume or an EQ to work with other instruments in the mix.

So I’m curious what the mids knob does to the tonality. Do you know, what knob position equates to the default Muff tone stack?

Weston grey looks a lot nicer in your photos than it does on SBP's website! Maybe I'll give it a shot.

If I was forced to use only one enclosure color for the rest of my life, there’s a good chance it’d be Weston Grey.

I just did the math. The low pass portion of the tone control has a corner frequency around 408Hz. The high pass portion ranges from 4kHz down to 680Hz with the Mid control all the way up. So it goes from extremely scooped to almost not scooped.

There's other tone shaping going on in the clipping stages, so the overall result might be different, but it probably won't ever sound mid focussed like a TS or Klon.
