I have searched the forum but cannot find an answer.

Has anyone successfully used a BC550Cinstead of a B? It seems the C has more gain.

Also, has anyone tried using a flipped 2N3904 in place of the BC560?

it doesn't matter.

parts list doesn't specify for either B or C.

BC560 is PNP.
if you want to sub it, it needs to be PNP. i used a BC557 in my build. no issues.

Adding the following so that I'm sub'd to the thread:

The NPN 2N3904's flip-side equivalent is a PNP 2N3906 — I bet you knew that already though.

My notes say the BC550's hFE ranges 110–800.
The 2N3904 hFE ranges 40–300.

BC560 hFE 200–450
2N3906 hFE 60–300

I ended up using a BC309B in place of the Bc560. I had a few and the one I used was showing 400 hfe.

The gain of the transistors don't really matter in this circuit. Don't overthink it, even though that seems to be the consensus around here. It's not a vintage fuzz.
