Cable Making

I've made probably about a million patch cables by now. Pretty much exclusively using Squareplug SP400 and Mogami 2314 these days, maybe some 2319 mixed in there.

But I haven't made an instrument cable/lead in yeeeeears. Last couple I made was pushing a decade ago. One's just started to fail, so I'm wanting to put together another or two.

That one was just good ol' Mogami 2524 and it had some Amphenol plugs. I don't love em but I guess they made it nearly 10 years so that ain't bad...

I'll probably stick with 2524 cable and was leaning towards Neutrik plugs but I'm curious if anyone else has any strong opinions on plugs/cable. The BTPA 2524-equivalent seems promising...

100% same! I started my soldering journey with rolling my own patch cables using the same cables and plugs + SP500s, SPS-4s and occasional SP-550s. Instrument cable-wise, I can vouch for the 2524 + Neutrik NP2RX plug combo as well.

I've done a few builds with the BTPA stuff, both the regular size for instruments and the thinner one for both instruments and patch cables. Actually doing a couple of thin shorties today with SP600 square plugs. I use mostly Neutriks, but have had good luck with Switchcraft and G&H too.

And then I have made a ton of balanced cables using good old Belden 8412. I used to get comp'ed pretty long end of reel cuts from my old employer, we used miles and miles of it for underwater SONAR stuff out on the hydropower dams. I use active basses so I don't care that much about cable capacitance in that application, and 8412 typically lasts for eons.

Nothing wrong with Mogami and Canare either though, IME.

I'm kinda curious too about the Squareplug SPS6M (which basically appears to be like if Squareplug did a Switchcraft 228) but idk how I feel about the screw-in strain relief. I've only ever done the angled squareplugs so I'm not familiar with their straight ones
