Clang Pedals Recommendations

There’s definitely some subjectivity here. The way I see it is, not necessarily high gain, but more-so the effect is producing enough upper harmonics in a way that they are creating an audible dissonance.

I dont understand what you mean by "really enjoying the seperation between the clangy harmonic high side and blown-out wooly low end side".

I think the Driving Notion is a parallel drive on a JFET blend,
the "high" side seems to have small interstage caps and the bias is intentionally weird, near gated, + 100nF input cap = clang
the low side is pretty standard 2 2N222 stages + 1uf input cap = wool
Theres a passive EQ split happening with the input caps I think, the low side overpowers the high-side on the lower three strings, while the clang is much more prominent on the upper three

Thats the cool separation effect, I feel like those Sallen Key-filter style 2-3 band distortions designs have a similar feel, with how you isolate and have fine control over those upper harmonics

I can play Neo Soul chords through it and a cleaned up Harmonic Percolator, so there are definitely clang designs with much less gain...

The Prunes and Custard is kind of a tame version of, but cool in its own way. The Unpleasant Surprise also dips into this territory. There is also the Mid-Fi Wave Folder on the wishlist, but it needs some more hype I think.

Also, a ringer into a ringer is gnarly. There’s a variation of this idea in one pedal, the ZVex Jonny Octave, though it’s a different type of octave up.

Speaking of Octave, and Clang, there is also the Octave Clang. Super low parts count, super fun times.

For the Unpleasant Surprise their doesn't seem to be any trimmers for the JFET drains? How was the build experience biasing the J201?
EDIT: found the build reports, might hold off until I have more SMD J201, love JFET fuzzes tho

How was the build experience biasing the J201?

At the time I built it, I wasn’t aware that this was something to consider. I must have gotten lucky, it sounded the way I expected with the first ones I grabbed and put in there.
