desoldering suggestions?

I recently bought an electric solder sucker off amazon after my regular old solder sucker bit the dust. the new electric solder sucker works great for bigger stuff like desoldering 3pdt, toggles but it is next to useless for smaller stuff like resistors and LEDs. I've already pulled up a few solder pads on accident trying to get finnicky parts out. I was just wondering if you guys had any reccomendations for getting some of these smaller components off without doing too much damage to surrounding components or board.
 
I usually clamp it in a holder so it’s upright and easy to get at both sides. Heat up the resistor on the components side of the board (if there’s room) while holding the sucker over the other side and suck it out while the iron is still hot on it.

What kind of sucker did you get? Never used an electric one so my advice may be moot 😂
 
Its a Velleman. the biggest downfall really is it has a wide tip that burns neighboring components. I've been doing a similar technique to what you described but this new solder sucker doesnt have enough suction on the smaller stuff

Ideally, you'll be heating up the joint. So, both pad and lead / pin of whatever you no longer want soldered

As @Nostradoomus mentions above, the Engineer SS-02 is the bee's knees when it comes to small scale desoldering. The silicone tips (cut to length) are amazing for getting into harder to reach spots, and it works to make a better seal for the vacuum action
