Does the Wampler Tumnus Deluxe still sound like a Klon?

I'm a bit curious about this one. I really like the idea of a Klon with a mids and bass pot but does that make it just another OD? Has anyone traced it?

I have a sort of love/hate relationship with the Klon. Well, that may be putting it a bit strongly... I don't really love it or hate it but I would be into making one I like. The stock circuit is a bit boring IMO - it's a lot of bits to make a pedal which sounds a lot like a TS9. I like the idea of being able to adjust lows and mids to suit the amp and feel that there should be a lot of potential there, but I don't know how well the mods have been implemented.

Any views/actual knowledge of the circuit?
 
I know that Wampler deviates from anything Original & that he didn't use germanium diodes on the Gold versions.
His last limited version sold for silly money coz he put the germanium diodes in it, the ''Red version!
I think Robert may have looked at it.
I own a dozen Wampler pedals when they were built In House with thru hole Technology
All his pedals are SMT for years now built by a major contractor that builds for other company's as well.

  • The mids and bass controls are effectively “off” when in the middle position, as these are referred to as “gyrator” style active eq controls
  • The treble is the exact same control as found on the standard Tumnus
  • The gain control on the Tumnus does two things at once – as you turn the gain up it turns down a parallel clean blended circuit at the same time. As you turn the gain down it not only turns the gain down but also turns up a parallel clean blended circuit.
 
I'm with you on the Klon. I've built two and was unimpressed both times. It's too shrill and the texture of the saturation isn't satisfying. My TS808 with LED clipping is much better at pushing other pedals or on its own when I'm playing a strat and want the mid boost.

Maybe try a Comprehensive Drive on here. It's a similar idea as a Klon where there is a bit of the clean signal that parallels the driven signal, but the quality of the distortion is nicer than the Klon
 
The Klon works Great at 2 things:
1. The Buffer is always on and when your running a 10 foot Cable from amp to pedal board then another 10 feet to your guitar, you can hear the difference!, especially Live at a Gig.
2, As a Clean to Mid boost on its own or after a drive pedal ala Tubescreamer, Bluesbreaker, Boss SD-1 ect ect to take you to the next level.
