I want to build an amp

We agree on the last part- anyone with a knack for building pedals should be able to transfer those skills easily to amp building. My contention with your May / Page / Clapton analogy is that amp building requires more significant time and financial investments. It's not like building a fuzz pedal just to experience it, then throwing it on the shelf.

Unless someone is building a Champ because they want a Champ, it seems wasteful to go through the time and effort and end up with an amp that costs $5-600 to build (conservatively speaking) that's going to collect dust in a corner. That's why I recommended leap frogging to something more useful..

I will say, though.. Champs are pretty badass for what they are! I just wouldn't use one as a pedal platform or bring one to a gig.
Exactly! Build a Champ because you want a Champ and will use a Champ.

I do see your point about the investment side of things, which I hadn't fully considered before —
those little glass-bottles and accoutrements are €₽€₦$৲V€!

You can see why I suck at chess, I only look at one move instead of imagining all the possible moves across the board. ♟️

I'm building a champ because I want to build a champ, um, actually 2, I got a HELL of a deal on the iron... I probably won't use it much since I have a self build Hiwatt DR504, and Marshall 1987, and a vintage 68 SFDR, and a couple 5e3's with different audio capacitors (yes they sound VERY different). I'm also working on, uhhhh.... I think ummm... 7 other amps.

Hey, I'm retired. I can't set around all day watching Rockford file reruns. Besides I don't think Rockford file reruns are playing anymore!

Currently in progress in one way, shape, or another two 5F1's, 5E3x (eXtended chassis), 6G9B, 1974X, 1987, 2203, and a matchless lightning. I'll probably give them away on Halloween instead of candy :sneaky:

First of all, I need your address before October 31st. Let me know when the giveaways start!

Second of all.. The two little ‘uns up front were my Champs. I found this really cool octal modded circuit on TDPRI and built the red one with a 6SL7 preamp. The TV Champ is a 5C1. Both had 10” speakers and 10w OTs. They were a nice departure from the standard 5F1 affair!

TRICK OR TREAT &...

HALLOWEEEEN AP—PLES!

Where do you live? I'll camp out on your doorstep 'til Oct 31st;
if I can leach a little power/wifi, I'll stream Rockford Files while I'm waiting...

Meanwhile, I've got a few chassis: a couple for 5F2-A and a Champ that I want to build up as a Garnet Herzog clone.

Heyboer is back in production, I've bought quite a few transformers from them just in the past few months. Got 'em from this guy, great prices:

I hit up Heyboer directly just as the lockdown was starting and they wound me a DR103 output trafo like Mojo sells at what appeared to be wholesale pricing, I had it in about a week. I'd never dealt with them before and have no idea why they did that, but I'm not complaining!

And now it's still sitting here, mounted to the custom chassis I got from Landfall Systems, along with more than half a dozen sub-modules that have been all built and ready to go for quite some time. Shooting for "measure 23 times, cut once" here, but somehow it never works out that way. I did build up the entire power amp section and test it with a variety of different bass preamps, which all sounded great through it. Maybe this year...maybe. ;)

Glad I bought some good EL-34s back then, the supply landscape is so very different now.
