I finally got these two finished. I started them over the summer but I needed a couple components that didn’t get ordered earlier.
I built them simultaneously and basically tested them back to back. The Deluxe is definitely Fendery with a clean tone that will break up when you crank it. The boost switch gets you to that breakup a little sooner.
The Tweed has some of the late 50s Bassman character where the bottom end can get a little flubby, and it definitely isn’t as clean as the Deluxe. It still has clarity, but not as mid scooped, and actually is a little mid forward. I need to tweak the biasing a little on the Tweed. I think I can get it a little cleaner and get a little more range out of the volume before breakup.
I decided to go with classic amp vibes with the paint.
The trickiest part of the build is that the power jack solder lugs are right where the switch is on both. There’s room to keep everything from shorting, but you need to get the wires to run to the side. Tweaking the lugs helped and I cut the lug for the battery connection off to make a little more room around the edge of the PCB.
Quite a few more builds coming. Numerous boards already populated just waiting for pots, enclosures, paint, and knobs.
