Introduce myself and Article 59

Hi all, I am just getting started in the hobby and wanted to introduce myself. I have been assembling pedals from Stewmac kits and it has been fun. So I got a little workshop set up and purchased all of the components I needed to begin. My first PedalPCB board that I have used to make a pedal is the Article 59. I threw the first one away when it did not work and then I took my time on the this one. It turned out fantastic. One of my favorite pedals is the Wampler Plexi and this pedal is a more powerful version. The board just fits in the 125b enclosure and the spot for the footswitch is a bit cramped but it all fits. Here is and image of the guts and pedal top. It is finished in primer and clear coated with Rustolleum 2x clear. The decals are thermal ink printed on clear. Also shout out to PedalPCB for their professionalism and fast service.

I love their Auditorium Platform and it worked flawlessly with this build. I also built a pedal from a blank after watching a Josh JHS video. It is not pretty but it works like a distortion pedal with 1N4148s. ! I hope to share and learn here. IMG_9255.jpeg

... I threw the first one away when it did not work ...

Please don't throw anything out — as you gain experience, you may be able to come back to older unsuccessful builds with a fresh set of more knowledgable eyes and see what needed fixing. Might have been something as simple as a wire crossed, an incorrect resistor-value or even a brand-new-but-faulty pot.

You are probably right. I just built a Fudge Round Fuzz and it was crackling and fading when engaged. I was frustrated after changing every pot, and cap and reflowing all solder. Barely any parts involved and I tested the values on every single resistor twice. So maddening. I gave up on that one today.

You’ve come to the right place!

Don’t be shy about posting problem builds. Take a clean close up of both sides, with any description of what’s happening (or not happening) and our team of sharp eyed investigators will toss out observations. We’ve all been there, and I for one, still visit regularly.

Here is the fudge round fuzz that did not work. It trailed off when you would hit a cord like there was cold solder somewhere - like a blat sound. So I refloated all the solder. I then changed the electrolytic 100 you. I changed all three pots. This is a picture of the front and back of the board without the pots because I removed them after I got frustrated. I tried this out on a PedalPCB audiorium platform.

Ok I built a second Fudge Round Fuzz and it works. I am not a fuzz fan but I will evaluate it. Not too mny parts involved. Sound is just ok. Maybe slighty underpowered and rather more like a straight distortion pedal. I always order two PCBs for each pedal because I am usually screwing up the first.

If you have a bad build that you’re sick of looking at or working on, just toss it in a box. There will come a day you where identifying and plucking parts off will seem trivial. Like your own salvage yard.
