Is the Catalinbread Adineko worth having?

I got "tame" oil drums represented via the SA Nemesis and Strymon Volante, but those never really did anything for me. A build of the Echo Dream 2 is ready to be assembled, which mighty maybe potentially do something somewhat similar. Still, the Adineko sounds really, really cool in de demos where it goes all of out wack and goes beyond the classic sounds; like dragging your sound through a tar. It's a bit of a one trick pony, so I'm not sure if buying it is worth it next to what I alread got. Anyone here more ideas on it? It's an FV-1, but maybe someone knows something that does this molasses marching echo/verb thing as well? Or maybe an effect that can be put on the delay trails of the things that I got to make them more dark and swampy.

Edit: Also got the Meet Maude, but that's too much of a clear-cut delay. It has the sound, but doesn't do the drenching.

I'd like to make my own, thanks to the Scientific Guitarist's "Don't Tell Ray", right after I'm done building the 500 or so PCBs ahead of it in my build-queue...

I can kind of get tarry sounds from my hydra with the age dial, although I don't think it does a progressive degradation. And obviously no modulation.

Take a look into the OBNE Black Fountain and the Greer Black Tiger, too.

I loooove my Black Fountain. I don't use it all the time, but when I want a murky wash of repeats and some wiggles, it's definitely my go-to

It's PT2399, but seems to be a rather simple build and sounds good in the demo. Gerber files available.

Edit: FWIW I have an Echo Dream 2 on the board right now and it doesn't really do the same thing because there's no filtering controls. The Hydra gets a lot closer, it can get pretty murky, although I think the repeats don't really get that much progressively murkier as they go - but it's really nice otherwise.

Very true. It was you pointing that effect out that made me do a dive into what is available. the Don't Tell Ray sounds quite nice, but I got that covered in my larger reverb boxes (which, I have learned, don't enjoy using too much because I lose too much time in "perfecting" it, while my personality calls for a "good enough"). It's the far out "sloshing" that pit the Adineko on my radar.

If only there were ways to dump FV-1 eeproms of brand pedals into a generic FV-1 PCB with some in/out, input filtering and pots...

With such a backlog, maybe it's an idea to drive around a bit in these day laborer pick-up points and get yourself some fine Mexican or Venezuelan fingers do the work on the cheap? The ever-present nagging of that backlog can't be good for you!

The demo does sound quite good. Don't Tell Ray, but I'm gonna have to move this one up the queue a ways.

Well, there is a way, but obviously the original pedal is not just a generic FV-1 PCB, but has more going on than just that. So you would have to copy the layout of the pedal.

But the EEPROM can be dumped, it's illegal to share them, but I'm not sure if it's illegal to copy it for your own use. Making a copy of a pedal you own is probably fine? But then if you sell the original, I'm not sure how that works.

What do you mean with sloshing? If you mean the part where it starts to oscillate, I think it should be simple to mod the Don't Tell Ray to allow for higher feedback values. And other PT2399 pedals do allow for oscillation, so I think it might work reasonably? But you would probably have to ask someone more experienced than me to be sure. I think R20 sets some sort of a "minimum" feedback amount, but I'm not sure if R12 and R13 also work similarly, and if those would need to be tweaked too?

Or if it's about something else, then maybe it wouldn't be helpful. Tbh I think if you want the thing the Adineko does, maybe you should consider looking for it used? But it does seem like the kind of thing you would end up not using that much, if I'm being honest. Although the pedal itself is otherwise probably really nice, so could be useful outside of that niche effect too?
