A thought hit me, would it be possible to create a PCB with cutouts for common labels like "Gain", "Volume", "Tone", TMB and so on, with possibly even small holes over them so you can space the text correctly for different sized knobs? Then you could use them as stencils to write the labels with a marker, but with very tidy lettering.
A bit like these:
Using a PCB would be because they can be pretty darn cheap, but I don't know if it's possible to have letter shaped cutouts in them or just holes.
I know there are rulers like that with cutouts for letters, but the advantage here would be that the kerning (?) would be fixed and the letters would all be even (as long as you tape the stencil on straight).
