Addressable LEDs make a LOT of noise. I won't say it is impossible but the noise changes frequency depending on what you are doing with the LEDs.
Bar LEDs are fine. A good reference project for using a VU meter IC is the Valve Wizard's Glass Blower w/VU which is also a nifty clean boost.

Looks like I need to track down some LM3914 or LM3916. Tayda, mouser, digikey are out. eBay has some questionable listings. Electric Druid has a replacement chip for $5 a pop. Anyone know a good eBay seller or other source for LM3916/4?

A battery door is way worse and we rocked those, plastic cases, non flagged backs with full cracks around them etc for years.
The advent of cfl/led lighting has made this worse, but I doubt a 4 light led bar cause much more of a problem than a plastic DC jack.
Honestly. The large surface of the LED conducting absorbed energy when bright stage light flashes on it and causing clicks/pops/static may be the biggest hurdle.
