Lm386 Gating

I put together a tutorial how to whip up the El Sol distortion. It's essentially 2 lm386 ICs in series. When I play through it with my humbuckers there's definitely some gating happening. Why? How can I remove this effect from the signal? I tried clamping the input signal a bit with a pot and it helped a little, but now I'm losing a lot of my dynamic while playing.

Like the notes don’t ring out as much? Try the LM386N-4, that’s the only one I’ve found that doesn’t do that.

Do you mean that weird oscillating effect after a note is held for a long time? Sorry if that isn't useful at all, my El Sol does that for some reason.

It’s almost like a transistor gating sound when you play too hard. The note almost sounds cut off

BUT if I have a circuit block before it such as in the distorts Maximus (an LPB1) the gating disappears which is what I want. Is the simple answer to put a booster or buffer in front?
