Low Tide Modulator no signal

Hello, I put together the low tide modulator and despite the power jack not fitting above the pcb and some poor drilling on my part I think it went well. I substituted the 2SK208-Y for a 2N5457 and the MCP602 for a LM358N. I also initially used an orange LED and may have wired it backwards. I swapped it for a red with the correct orientation and the light comes on and I occasionally hear a popping noise. I'm guessing I fried a component but it's unclear which is wrong. I swapped the LM258P and that removed the popping but provides no output signal. At this point I'm stuck and my guess is to just start replacing components near the LED like the J201, if someone has some better direction that would be greatly appreciated. unnamed.jpg

I replaced my 5v regulator as it was reading about 7 on the output, now my chips are receiving 5v on the correct pins. I'm getting the same result as before though with no signal. I also am pulling ~20-30ma from my supply both before and after replacing the regulator. I'll look for signal spots now.

I've got output now, but it's just acting like a crappy fizzy boost. The trim pots inside definitely do something but I can get none of the desired effects. Is there a lot of tweaking to be done with the trimpots or could I have destroyed the microcontroller?
