SOLVED Mod Electronics Odyssey Phaser optical whistle

Inspired by VanWhy’s build, this one was put on priority. I heard the “gyang gyang gyang gyang” when combining this pedal with fuzz in his demo and I immediately said “I have GOT to have that!”

I’ve now had two attempts at this build with 2 separate boards, both with the same unfortunate result. The phase effect seems audibly working fine in the background, but I’m getting a loud siren-sounding whistle that can be manipulated with the controls that goes in perfect timing with the pulse of the yellow LED. The instructions note to move the input/output connections to the right to clear the clocking circuitry, and I have done this on all attempts. Same result boxed and unboxed. LED direction is correct as noted on board. No change when using different LDRs. No change when trying a TL072 instead of a TL062 as VanWhy noted. Also attempted wiring direct to 3PDT lugs as wiring diagram indicates but result is the same if using switch board or not.

When you did the second rebuild, did you use all new components or did you reuse some from the first build?

The pic of the solder side of the board the board is out of focus, can't see any detail. The wood it's sitting on is in nice focus.

When you have it unboxed, how do you have the input/output wires ran? When unboxed does moving these wires change the sound any?

Have you double and triple checked all component values?

Hi and thanks for the help! This whistle is really strange. It changes with controlling the speed and intensity.

I replaced the solder side photo with a clearer image.

I used all new components for the new build except the enclosure. None were reused so I currently have two completed wired boards, one in an enclosure and one outside the enclosure.

When testing outside the enclosure for both completed boards, i ran the input and output wires away and to the right as indicated in the instructions. Moving wires when testing outside (or inside) the enclosure doesn’t manipulate the sound. The whistle sounds in perfect timing with the pulse of the LED. I can hear the phase effect and that seems to be working but the whistle is loud over top of the phase effect.

Reflowed all solder joints and double and triple checked all components on both boards.

Tried the pedal with a different 9V power adapter and it works. Note to others: doesn’t work with a D’Addario YS12 AC-DC 9volt power adapter I use to test all my other pedal builds. Works with a Boss PSA-120. Marking this solved.
