Built this for a friend who wants a Rat pedal. Used an OP07 chip since I didn't know where to source a legit LM308. And I used one of the last of my old stash of jfets: a 2n5457 that measured with a really high Vss seemed like a good substitute for the 2n5458. I socketed the chip and the slew capacitor, in case my friend wants to experiment with different chips.
It's been a while since I tried a Rat. I was never a big fan of Rats , because at high gain, it can't decide if it's a distortion or a fuzz. But while demoing, I realized I really do like it when set to low gain! I have an Informant PCB ready to go in the future, and I hear it's kind of lower gain version of a Rat, so I hope it gives me that sound. If not, I may end up getting myself one of these.
