I thought that looked like hide, i kept catching a little glimpse of the corner. Interesting. Love the Kora, I took an African music class in college and the instructor brought his in one day. Super cool. Well, I guess I'll just go obsess over guembri now. My vegan wife is gonna loooove it when I make one.

They’re one of the few bands that still puts out consistently compelling music. Check out their Cradle to the Grave album— bangers all the way thru.

Surely you know the ample Elvis Costello connections Squeeze has, right?

Yeah, I actually discovered them in HS from an old girlfriend who for some reason LOVED Rockapella (seriously, they were her favorite band ever! I never even knew that they were a real band, I just remember them from Carmen San Diego!) And they had a cover of Tempted. It was a few years later that I really got in to EC and found the connection through him.

You suggested Argybargy to me a while back (based on me liking Pulling Muscles) and I've listened to it a couple times since then but it hasn't grabbed me yet. Nothing has struck me the way Pulling Muscles has, but familiarity counts for something with music so I keep listening. It's all about getting to know the music, I guess. I do like it but haven't fallen in love or anything like that yet.

I'm usually very anti-compilation, but Squeeze's "Singles- 45's and under" is honestly a great intro to their catalogue as it's most of their singles prior to 1982, and not only is every song a banger, but many of them differ from the album versions. You'd probably especially like Another Nail In My Heart if you like Pulling Mussels. On top of that album, some great stand-out tracks are Someone Else's Heart, which Costello actually covered for the recent Squeeze Swindles series that's been released for Record Store Day the past few years.

I have been on a big Los Lobos kick lately. My dad has been a fan of them since I was a little kid and I've grown up with them most of my life, but lately I've really been feeling them.

I hadn't heard this one in a while but damn, does this song jam. And I just can't say it enough - David Hidalgo has an amazing voice and I think deserves a lot of credit as a songwriter and vocalist.


 
Here's something for y'all with small kids. Pre covid, we used to take our kids to see Red Yarn, a local children's musician, in concert at this little ballroom above a bar in my hood. Finally we were making a plan to go again and he just canceled due to a positive covid test. Womp womp. I picked up deep woods revival on vinyl and my kids love it. Folk Americana some traditional covers but many original songs. The rare children's artist I can listen to.
