Revisiting Pedal builds you didn't like.....

You sure about that? This could get to Hatfield and McCoy territory very quickly…😂

Big Miff is a distortion and Fuzzers sound best into dirty amps. Just my personal opinion.

I agree with the Big Miff thing, but a Big MUFF is a fuzz, the Rat is a distortion, and the Blues Driver is amazing...

Also, FF into clean wasn't much of a problem for Mr. Gilmour...

Clipping diodes, and two sets of them, screams distortion to me, but we digress…

“Clean” is maybe too broad a term. That’s my fault.

If you look at DG’s Hiwatt settings during his Fuzz Face era, he’s got the Normal Channel anywhere between 1:30-2:30 with the Master at around Noon.

It may not be distorted but it’s LOUD and pushing a lot of air and with a very stout bass response.

As an amendment, I should say that I prefer FF/MK II pedals into a truly dirty amp but at the very least, you need to have some volume for them to sound their best.

In my house I have a low wattage amp. So when I say “clean”, I’m typically talking about low volume. That’s not the case for most other people, where clean is bigger and bolder.

That’s my fault and now I feel like an ass for not clarifying!
No worries. We've scared everyone else away anyway...

I like clean and loud. If I want dirt, I'll kick on a pedal. I don't even play clean that much, I just like my foundation tone to be very clean. The pedals are the spice, and the clean tone is the plant-based meat substitute (I'm vegetarian). No spice can fix shitty meat...except Old Bay.

What's a circuit that always sounds good? regardless of amp settings/guitar/etc? I'll build one and to the enclosure Old Bay themed...

I never got the chance to look at Dave's Hiwatt settings. The roadies would always kick me off the stage. I would scream at them "I only want to see the settings he's using while playing the fuzz face damn you!!" but all to no avail.

My definition of fuzz is how it affects the bass notes. If my low E dissolves into a mush of fuzz then it's a fuzz. If it twangs it's an overdrive. If it's a fuzzy twang then it's distortion. If it kinda blats from time to time it's broken somewhere.

So by this precise definition, useful to no-one but me, a Big Muff and it's brother the Big Miff are fuzzes. I like building them but rarely use them.
