I recently saw an episode of That Pedal Show showing “how far tone has come over the years” where Mick & Dan compared the overdrive in a 1988 Boss multi-effect unit (a Boss OD-2) to the Vemuram Jan Ray. Mick even went so far as to describe the Jan Ray as one of the most important overdrives since the Klon Centaur. I thought the Jan Ray sounded great, and this was the first clone that came up in my Google search. This is my first build from Ryan and I think he’s done incredibly well. Ryan offers the top plate with the PCB which is a really nice touch.

I know the Jan Ray had taken some heat for essentially being a slightly modded Timmy at a much higher cost, but what matters to me is having a successful build and a great sounding pedal, and that’s the result here. I do plan to A/B my original Timmy and the PPCB Tommy with the Black Triangle to compare the tones.

The enclosure is the gorgeous Love My Switches July 2026 powder coat drop “Starry Nightshade.” One of their best yet IMHO.
