i’ve never heard a pair of 4558s sound so good.
this is one caught me by surprise.
absolute sleeper.

the HM-3 wasn’t on my radar at all until i saw some chatter around it when it was first requested here and then made available shockingly quickly.
i already had plans to grab a HM-2 board, and then thought i should probably give the HM-3 Hyper Metal a go while i’m at it.

a few google searches gave the impression that many users have had an underwhelming or dissatisfying experience with the HM-3.. (perhaps because it’s nothing like the HM-2 and was expected to be?)

i’ve also seen other anecdotes that suggest this distortion pedal essentially functions like a dual rectifier inabox.

and i think i'll have to agree with that entirely.
it’s a beast.
so much low end. it’s huge.
a thick grinding distortion, with eq controls that IMO work better than the HM-2.

(it took twice as long as a normal build, i almost chickened out and cbf doing it like this, but im glad i made the effort)

it also takes a drive/boost remarkably well. just like a real recto or ampinabox should.
- with a good drive in front, it opens right up and turns into a searing articulate high gain monster.

it actually sorta seems to function similar to how i find the lead / OD channel on my SLO100 works for me, in that it’s got plenty of overdrive and eq range, but it’s kinda useless to me without an overdrive - i need that low end cut and mid/highmid boost going into the amp/distortion circuit, to get that right response.
this HM-3 does the same thing. i love it when a distortion pedal does this. the best ones do.
