@dan.schumaker ’s take on the Boss DM-3.
If you scored one of these boards when Dan offered em up, you should build it. It’s great. I’ve been on a mini analog delay journey and this is my favorite of the bunch so far.
I started with a skoolie from Madbean. I dig the modulation, but I need to take another pass at calibrating it to try and reduce the noise. I was real excited to finish that one and should have spent more time on that step.
Next up was an AD-9 from @blackhatboojum. I put in a full effort on calibrating that one and got better results. It’s been on my board since I finished it and it sounds great. There is noticeable clock noise in the upper range of delay time, but I’ve mostly just kept it at 12 o clock or below and it’s been great.
So today I wrapped up the DM-3. The clock noise is there, but it’s even quieter than the AD-9, and I’d say the repeats are a little bit brighter in a way that I like.
After hyper focusing on the sound of that clock frequency and spending a lot of time tweaking trimmers I think I’m hearing it in an over-emphasized way.
To re-set my expectations I plugged up my three DIY delays along with a Boss DM-2 Waza. With the DM-2 in classic mode where it should equal the original, both the DM-3 and the AD-9 had less noise than the Boss with the time cranked on the boss, and the other two set to match it.
That made me feel better that I didn’t need to keep chasing my tail, and also left me even more impressed with the efforts of Dan and Clinton putting these together.
