Unbelievable how you seem to have a tool for everything. That can't be all your own collecting, right? Inherited some from your father or other family?

My father always had a distaste for tools and manual work. I did inherit a few nice pieces from his father who was a german car mechanic, though sadly most of his tools were sold off when they closed his business.
Most of my tools are the result of my own obsessive collecting.
There's a lot of hand wringing about the long decline of American manufacturing and resulting loss of good working class jobs (see the tariff threads), but as a white collar worker/ blue collar hobbyist/ tool collector there has been some benefit.
A hundred years ago my part of the country was a global center of manufacturing of precision tools and machines with many thousands of workers employed as machinists. My big tool collecting years (about a decade ago) happened to line up with the years that a lot of that generation of machinists was dying off. There was a glut of tools being sold off into a market with no real demand, and I was regularly able to buy lots of used machinist tools for barely more than their scrap value.
My favorite place to buy tools is an annual event in my area where old men haul old farm machines and engines out to a field to show them off. They have a great flea market.
