How'd that AliExpress chip work for you?

The first two prototypes were built using ICs from AliExpress.

Another option, if you have a hot air tool and the ability, is to remove the CH341A from a working USB EEPROM programmer. These are available for less than $10 from Amazon, and you can confirm that it's functional before removing it from the module.

I've been meaning to ask that. Can you recommend a hot air tool? I imagine conventional hair-dryers probably put out enough static to fry the chips.
 
I use a little 858D hot air tool. You can get em on Amazon for $50 or less.

I mostly use it for degooping and heat shrink tubing, but it works great for reworking SMD components.
