Big fan of Dr Scientist circuits, Ryan's a solid-good bloke, and yet I've not had the fortune to ever have a Sunny Day.
I'm still kicking myself for not buying an I Love Fuzz delay when it came up for sale.
For PedalPCB PT2399 delays, the
SEABED (Mad Prof Deep Blue Delay) is your best bet. It's the simplest and a reputedly good sounding delay.
The Magnetron might be another option as it has some modulation built in already, but maybe it suits your needs.
The EQD-based PT2399 offerings are more than likely not in the vein of the Sunny Day, but I've never compared clips/schematics/anything between them.
You'll need to mod whichever PT2399 delay you choose for the modulation (if it doesn't already have it). You could also add Tap Tempo via the TAPTATION chipset. There are other Tap-Tempo options I know of (perf or UK-Electronic.de), but they don't include the modulation. If you don't need tap-tempo, that certainly opens the modulation-door up a bit wider.
[Seabed's] R17 connects to PT2399’s Pin 6, entry point for the modulation mods you'll be making. PedalPCB doesn't currently offer a modulation daughterboard for PT2399-based builds. You could get the modulation and tap-tempo daughterboard from GuitarPCB. There may be other modulation options from MadBean, Fuzz Dog or UK-electronic.de and elsewhere that I'm unaware of. I'm pretty sure I've seen modulation daughterboard layouts for vero and I know
ELS offers a modulation perf layout based on Grind Custom's De Profundis delay.
If you want the dual-functionaity footswitch for turning on/off the modulation AND the ability to send the delay into self-oscillation, then you'll need PPCB's smart relay offering, I think
the DPDT one is probably the one you want.
Whether any of that gets you in the Sunny Day-sounding ballpark or not, I don't know. I've never seen a schematic of the Sunny Day and have not heard of anyone tracing the circuit. Probably because Ryan's offering the Sunny Delay at a reasonable price and as mentioned is such a good bloke that people support his efforts.
I do understand having the itch to build it yourself, though.
