Tape Delay mkii

I spent a lot of time this summer prepping enclosures, but this is the first pedal I've finished since I did a Magnetron delay in April. I let a friend buy that one, and I've been missing it. I was hoping this would fill that void for me, and it definitely does.

Weirdly I've built some noisy pt2399 pedals and couldn't stand them, but having control over it with the noise knob, I'm into it. I spent a bunch of time running this with the noise and warble both maxed out and having a great time.

The build doc called for a 2n5089 with hfe >800 in Q1 and explained that the big hfe there = big warble. I tested 20 or 30 and the highest I found was 650, so I do wonder what that would be like with more oomph, but the chorus-y modulation I'm getting is pretty great. I have another one of these to build, and that one will get something with even lower hfe, so maybe I'll try the pot mod from 25k - 50k outlined in the build doc.

I bought some six lug DPDT stomps so I could do these up Aleph Null style, but when I gave them a couple test clicks, they just didn't feel right to me, so I went with a trusty Tayda blue instead.

In general I'm happy with my current enclosure system - posca lettering and matte clear epoxy spray paint, but once in a while there's a funny reaction where a particular posca pen wants to bead up on a particular enclosure instead of flowing out nicely. I don't know if it's some residual solvent on there from wiping it down, or maybe insufficient cleaning, but this was one of the bad ones. It's readable, but the ugly edges are still disappointing.

I know it's not up to your standards, but the lettering is miles ahead of anything I could achieve with a marker!
Thanks! I trace a lettering template with a pantograph, so there isn't a ton of skill involved. I tried actually hand lettering an enclosure recently because it was a funny shape and didn't fit my jig, and I gave up after a few tries. I'm jealous of folks with a nice hand-style. I've watched a lot of videos of pin-stripers, sign painters, calligraphers. I'd love to be able to do that kind of work.

I used to do calligraphy and my handwriting is still shit. I've learned not to trust myself to do anything that requires a steady hand.

Not sure if it’s the lighting or something about the matte clear coat but that finish almost looks like Easter candy. In a good way. Or maybe I’m just hungry.

Great build! It’s so tidy and symmetrical. And those flat LED things from AES are always classy. I have one of these in my backlog and am stoked to build it. I *also* have a mag echo waiting to go, only because a pal took the last one I made. And two bontempo pt2399 projects as well. Too many 2399 projects? Nah. The tape ii will be first for sure though.

The pink and green is definitely Easter M&Ms vibes. Ha!

Looking forward to hearing more about the bontempo stuff when you get to those. Sounds like something I’d like to try.
