Trying to get a very old amp OD sound..

I recently listened to the Pedal Movie (because a friend insisted I do) and while a lot of it was obvious, clichéd and self serving there were a few interesting moments. At 6 minutes 23 there is a clip of an old recording of guitar. It's that classic big box guitar played through old amp (possibly with octal preamp tubes?) and pushed enough that it's just starting to clip. It's a very distinctive sound and one I have yet to achieve with an OD pedal.

Has anyone heard anything other than playing through an old, pushed tube amp that could get this kind of sound? I have built many circuits which claim to and while they do a reasonable job of higher gain it's the lower gain sounds that most struggle with. I'm a big Nick Curran fan too and he used to use Vero amps at times - The sound he would get was amazing, and I've never heard a pedal get sounds like that. His tone was a bit dirtier sometimes, with that sort of inter-modulated distortion which seems to thicken the sound. Most ODs seem to be designed to avoid that kind of "choked up" distortion.

Ideas?

Small amp turned up in a big room with a couple of mics to capture everything at once running through a tube console into a tube eq with a broad mid boost into a tube tape machine preamp and later through another tube pre on the lathe.

Oh I realise it's a whole bunch of things... I just like that sound!

I can get some of what I want from the Missing Link Audio Eliminator Overdrive - or at least my version of it. It uses op-amp clipping! I can get pretty close with a few ODs but was wondering if there was anything which could get me closer still.

Chet Atkins used to get a great warm clipped sound on early albums like Hi Fidelity but not sure if it was amp or recording or both.

Lovepedal Super Six first thing that popped into my mind. Haven't played one in years though. Pretty basic mosfet boost. Now that Im thinking of it, the old ass hollow body I was playing at the time might have had something to do with it. Gold foil pickups
