That hasn't been my experience, but I have no problem admitting there are better options out there. The main appeal of the 555 design is simplicity, it's not incredibly sensitive to layout, and the parts are dirt cheap. Better supplies can be made with $10-20 of parts, but a perfectly usable (though far from perfect) supply can be made for $2-3 in parts.
The NE555 is far from perfect, Chuck's points from 2022 cover the shortcomings pretty well. But it is still used by a lot of builders (not just hobbyists, I still see it in commercial pedals [besides my own] today) because it is easy to use and it works.
