Uberfuzz Motorboating

Built an Uberfuzz and it wants to motorboat… sounds like a fuzzy tremolo. When I turn the trimmer, the tempo ramps up and down. I used 2n5088 and twisted the legs to match what I believe is correct for the 2sc828 (ECB). For what it’s worth, I also tried 2n222a in there with the same results.
Diodes are 1n34a, but I’m not convinced they’re legit. They’re the smallest Ge diodes I’ve ever seen.
Any thoughts??

I like to motorboat, but that's another story.

It's customary to post detailed pix of both sides of the board and show the off-board wiring.

2SC828 is indeed ECB looking at the flat face with the leads pointed down. Make sure you have 2N5088 the leads bent the right way.

Did you sub any other parts?

What happens when you turn the EXPANDER knob?

The wrong diodes won't do this. Real 1N34A diodes are clear glass. If they look like Schottky (tiny orange glass), then they probably are. Not to worry, many people sub Schottky for Germanium in this circuit.

Do a thorough visual inspection of all parts and solder joints. Make sure the board is clean. Fix anything that looks wrong.
