I think it's loosely based on the lpf in the onboard preamp of the wal basses he used to play. Bell boost and a LPF or resonant lpf as some may say. Maybe resident bass preamp proctologist @Passinwind has a better idea of what happens in a Wal? And how a Wal wah would work.
