What's the special nature of Russian 2D503B diodes?

Those look like PIN diodes to me. Designed for vHF operation, they have a higher Vf which might be useful in pedal circuits. The various BA243, 244, 282, 283 & 482-484 have similar characteristics. Bear in mind that pedal circuits (usually) drive soft clipping diodes well below 1mA, so Vf at 10mA is of little interest.

Other than the effect of series resistance at higher currents, ALL Si PN diodes have the same shape V-I curve. It's physics. There are some Schottkys out there with unique V-I curves.

Alright guys. Yes I could get my DMM out but can I confirm here that the right end is the cathode?

Your DMM should tell you. One direction will have a much higher resistance reading than the other. In that direction, the DMM's positive lead is on the cathode.

You are holding the cathode end, according to the symbol printed on the diode body.
