Finally a tape measure with 10ths…..

Why, evolution! Both measuring systems have advantages and disadvantages. If you want to work with something a bit finer than whole mm, what do you do? Get a scale with 10th of mm's? Who could possibly read that, not me. But if you use the sae then you can use 16'ths, 32'nds or 64ths. OTOH doing math with sae can drive a person insane.

SO I got an idea. Since the search engines weren't showing me metric I decided to just go to Milwaukee's website and look for metric tape measures. Bingo! I got the part number, went to Home Depot and plugged it in and here it is, the tape measure I've been looking for. Searched for metric tape measure after that and got sockets.... Lord save us from AI search engines.....!!!!!

Someone told me the other day a tip for how to get better search results.

1) use incognito mode
2) vpn from a different country.

is this the future we all imagined when we first heard of the internet? I think not...
Right, in my case I've ordered a LOT of sockets, and have a full metric set including deep sockets. So the AI looked at what I ordered, and looked at the price of sockets vs the price of a tape measure and has decided I am only to be returned sockets in my search. That's an example of weighted list processing which is used a lot in AI apps..... Once upon a time there was a language called LISP which was designed solely with this type of processing in mind.

Interesting. Mine are accurate 🤷‍♂️
Probably a quality control issue, with the *entire world* getting sick a lot of quality issues are popping up. For instance, I ordered 100 3/8" x 6" bolts at Lowes(20 x 5 pack). They changed my one line item into three line items of 16, 2 and 2. Still making 20 five packs for a total of 100. They shipped 20. Grumble grumble. I called them, and after 25 minutes the line went dead as it was 7pm and they closed. Grumble, again....

Dude, we have way too much common history, it’s kinda creeping me out…

Yup. The AI-driven lists of stuff drives me nuts.

I used to report on technology and can remember when tech companies first started spewing how great it was to be able to have the AI learn your preferences so that when looking for a restaurant near you the tech would show you only the things you like. Those tech punters thought it was the greatest thing since pre-sliced bagels and all I could think of immediately was "So much for discovering that amazing bistro a block away when all it's showing are pizzerias 3 to 10 blocks out..."

I don't want homogenisation when I'm searching for restaurants, new music, or ... anything.
If you're only given things similar to what you already like, then how are you supposed to discover new things and expand your horizons (and your mind)?

I see this form of AI-search as leading to further insularity, not reaching out and connecting more people with each other and sharing ideas and growing. It's becoming an even more "me first, my way or the highway" type of world.

So while searching for nuts and bolts, since Lowes price was 80% lower than the price REALLY is (1.22 each instead of 1.22 for a five pack), I started a private search window so the internet didn't know who I was. And instead of ONLY getting lowes and amazon, I got these people. I'm saving about $60 bucks on this order compared to the aforementioned price gougers and selection WAS A BREEZE instead of MAYBE YOU WANT A BARBEQUE WITH THAT.
