While you’re pseudo metaphysical deconstruction of this challenge is intellectually laudable, it is also superfluous. But I am a kind god and not without mercy.

I will acquiesce to your notional additions to the list beyond the count of five with the following exceptions:

1) each successive non-integer numbered pedal must be housed in an enclosure 1/2 the volume of the next smallest pedal in the list
2) the total current draw of the pedals on the list may not exceed 3.1459 milliamperes.

Should we really still be clinging to mere "conventions" in 2023 ? I would humbly draw your attention on these few wise words from the Article 6 of the French Civil Code :

"One cannot derogate, by particular conventions, from the Laws which relate to Public Order and good Morals."
 
EHX HOG - this covers so much ground in the desert island situation. It eliminates the need for my ocelot, filter fx, and octave up fuzz.

Going back to OP's question, it really depends on which of my (real or fictitious) bands is on the island with me and what my needs are. There's no universal solution

As self appointed proctor and deity of this thread (apparently) I feel obliged to challenge you further:

You can have any fictitious band you want, but only one, your needs are you must play in order to not be sacrificed to the volcano god by the natives and you only know that the tribal king likes T-Rex.

Maybe there are some circuits that tend to get close to "universal solution" ?

I mean you'll always be happy to have a good reverb, for exemple.

Edit: Isn't GE-7 a perfect "universal solution" to shape your signal ?

For a desert island, isn't it the most logical choice to find the best compromise between versatility and quality ?

So far, i am so used to hear some BOSS effects everywhere, this brand had such a huge impact on stompboxes, that most of their circuits sound like universal solutions to me.
To the point where it's almost a bit conformist to use a boss pedal. In every categories, they're probably in the top ten of the players's most used stompboxes, at least.

I think the Rat sounds best at moderate dirt and volume levels.

I see LEDs or clipping diodes and I say … not a fuzz. To me a fuzz makes fuzz by wringing toan out of transistors OUCH something stung m OUCH what the OUCH! Hell!

Chase Bliss Condor

The Condor + a Morningstar is a ridiculously flexible combination. You can cop tremolo, phaser, overdrive, boost, and wah like sounds. If I had an amp with some gain I might even replace the Timbre Man with an expression pedal. This would be my desert island rig, but it sounds like OP was looking for DIY, in which case I’d go with Option 1.

I have a pedal into which I have built a Great Dane (my version of the Dane which has a bass pot and a slightly less bright booster) and my version of the Timbreman. So just that and a Flint would be all I'd need. I don't really care if you call that five or two pedals. It's generally all I need. And the only reason I have two ODs is because I like the Timbreman with my Gretsch and the Great Dane with my other guitars.
