What are your 5 Desert Island Pedals?

Guitar/keyboard/drum machine :

1/ : Meridian compressor (I would also consider Walrus Deep Six, but I know Meridian would be my final choice)
1.9/ : Modded BD-2 as OD/Distortion, on perfboard if possible. * If it was only one effect allowed, it would be this one *.
2/ : Fuzz Factory from Zvex (a real original one please) and a simple noise gate if we need to cut the whistling noise on some settings.
2.1/ : Dandy Horse or Flintlock for modulation (* or one of these...)
2.2/ : EHX Oceans 11 reverb (this thing can't really get cloned, the chip inside is much more powerful than FV-1, and "it's a good chip", see replies #21, 22)
3/ : Echo-DC, it's a Memory Man early version, called Echo 600. Hydra is tempting, but we'd have many regrets, except for the drum machine.
4/: Boss GE-7 EQ, without any mod.
5/ : Boss RC-3 Loop Station (* or this one...)

Bass :

Meridian
Bass Amuser, bass tube overdrive (can also work on guitars. If the guitar player isn't satisfied, he can always mod it, right ?)
360 Bass Fuzz or big muff op-amp
CE-2b with intensity + vibrato mods, or Redshift Phaser (EHX Small Stone with every mods), or a Flintlock.
TS-50 preamp
EHX Oceans 11
RC-3 loop station
Pro-Cessor mixer blender splittter, so we can play a bit with the guitar effects, without bothering with difficult-to-design, time-consuming and sophisticated heavy mods.

I would add the Spectron enveloppe filter for all instruments, but you said only 5.... I guess I'd try to smuggle it under my jacket, next to a BBW, an OCD v.2 hidden in my pants, and a Tweed Man Overdrive under my hat.

You are certainly either a politician or a lawyer. You broke every possible rule/convention of this fairly simple task. You even added a separate category for Bass and grandfathered in 8 additional pedals.

nice choices though... :)

I beg your pardon dear Mr Haney, sir ? I answered the best I could, always remaining respectfully and strictly within the scope of the question.

Are we sure there is only one way to count to five ? "8 additional pedals" you claim ? I will refrain from quoting Zeno of Elea about the Arrow paradox.

Let's quickly finish this brief argument with an irrefutable proof, based on good old science :

(please click on : "reveal the answer")

Although everyone can see how smuggling stompboxes on the island could legitimately appear, to a few narrow-minded observant people, to be part of a suspicious behavior.

I'll be glad and honored to give further details about this difficult but well-considered decision, and clear any misunderstanding, thanks to Science, and thanks to the Republic.

While you’re pseudo metaphysical deconstruction of this challenge is intellectually laudable, it is also superfluous. But I am a kind god and not without mercy.

I will acquiesce to your notional additions to the list beyond the count of five with the following exceptions:

1) each successive non-integer numbered pedal must be housed in an enclosure 1/2 the volume of the next smallest pedal in the list
2) the total current draw of the pedals on the list may not exceed 3.1459 milliamperes.

Should we really still be clinging to mere "conventions" in 2023 ? I would humbly draw your attention on these few wise words from the Article 6 of the French Civil Code :

"One cannot derogate, by particular conventions, from the Laws which relate to Public Order and good Morals."

EHX HOG - this covers so much ground in the desert island situation. It eliminates the need for my ocelot, filter fx, and octave up fuzz.
Moonn Lo-fran
Junk trunk
Viib
Low tide

Took me a while to get down to 5, my 2 favorite chuck d bones pedals, klon and electric mistress get a runner up shout out.

Going back to OP's question, it really depends on which of my (real or fictitious) bands is on the island with me and what my needs are. There's no universal solution

As self appointed proctor and deity of this thread (apparently) I feel obliged to challenge you further:

You can have any fictitious band you want, but only one, your needs are you must play in order to not be sacrificed to the volcano god by the natives and you only know that the tribal king likes T-Rex.

There's no universal solution
Maybe there are some circuits that tend to get close to "universal solution" ?

I mean you'll always be happy to have a good reverb, for exemple.

Edit: Isn't GE-7 a perfect "universal solution" to shape your signal ?

For a desert island, isn't it the most logical choice to find the best compromise between versatility and quality ?

So far, i am so used to hear some BOSS effects everywhere, this brand had such a huge impact on stompboxes, that most of their circuits sound like universal solutions to me.
To the point where it's almost a bit conformist to use a boss pedal. In every categories, they're probably in the top ten of the players's most used stompboxes, at least.

Not to derail this train but there are arguments whether a muff is a fuzz and if that’s up for debate Im not sure a rat can reasonably be a contestant…. Now that I smacked that hornets nest ….View attachment 45379
I think the Rat sounds best at moderate dirt and volume levels.

I see LEDs or clipping diodes and I say … not a fuzz. To me a fuzz makes fuzz by wringing toan out of transistors OUCH something stung m OUCH what the OUCH! Hell!

Option 1:
Copper Clad Fuzz
Phase II
Mach 1 Overdrive
Keeley Eccos
Spatialist

Covers all the bases for me. The Keeley Eccos could be an BYOC Echo Royale if you really need DIY.

Option 2:
Morningstar MC8
Chase Bliss Condor
Timbre Man
Meris Polymoon
Meris Mercury 7

The Condor + a Morningstar is a ridiculously flexible combination. You can cop tremolo, phaser, overdrive, boost, and wah like sounds. If I had an amp with some gain I might even replace the Timbre Man with an expression pedal. This would be my desert island rig, but it sounds like OP was looking for DIY, in which case I’d go with Option 1.

1. TC Electronics Polytune 3 (with buffer)
2. Aion Cirrus (Ibanez ST9)
3. Art of 59 Sagittarius (one of the first Klon clone)
4. Aion Helios (Rat)
5. Engl Cabloader (cabsim as earphone amp)
In the OP the earphone amp was a gimme, so ...

You can choose something new for 5th place AND keep your Engl Cabloader!

Just don't offend the Big Woo, and drink your soda...

1. A boost (Clandestine)
2. A Timmy variant (Timbreman)
3. A Honey Bee variant (Honey Beest)
4. A compressor (Pale Green)
5. Something with JFETs (Chop Shop, Fingers, Deofol)

1. ODR1
2. HX Stomp

Fingers crossed the island has WiFi and then I'll still get the updates for the stomp and all the new stuff that gets added.

I have a pedal into which I have built a Great Dane (my version of the Dane which has a bass pot and a slightly less bright booster) and my version of the Timbreman. So just that and a Flint would be all I'd need. I don't really care if you call that five or two pedals. It's generally all I need. And the only reason I have two ODs is because I like the Timbreman with my Gretsch and the Great Dane with my other guitars.
