Peterson Strobotune mini

I couldn't find a Korg Pitchblack Mini so bought a Peterson Strobotune Mini this week. I had one of those blue Peterson tuners years ago and didn't like it so tried this one in the store before I bought it. This mini version is great.

In their blurb Peterson are proud about how they have listened to the feedback from players and used top-mounted jacks on this tuner. That's actually quite an achievement for a mini pedal. But they kinda missed the point because you still need to leave room at the sides if you want to use the little menu switches on the sides or use a power supply with a regular plug. I guess if you had a USB power supply it might work as there is a USB socket on top but I'm not sure if that will work for power.

Still, it takes up less space than the regular version because that is wider and has side jacks. And the display is way big enough despite it being a mini tuner.

It's fun that you can change the colour of the display. And the display is really easy to use - the older version I had was a PITA to use but this one is clear, steady and very easy to use. I'm just using the regular guitar setting but it has loads of "sweetened" tuning settings for all sorts of things. I'll probably never use them ... It also has three different bypass settings. Out of the box it has a buffered setting which means that the tuner is always on. Using the footswitch just acts as a mute, but you can tune at any time without using the footswitch as long as you don't mind hearing your efforts through the amp. I've set it to "true bypass" for now which means that when you're not using it the display turns off and supposedly your signal goes through untouched. I can't really hear any difference between the modes which is a good thing. I forget what the third setting is. I'll never use it.

Overall I'm very happy with it. It's the first time I've had a tuner which is as good as a Korg for me.

They’re great right? I’ve got the Strobostomp HD and it’s been perfect.

That looks cool, especially the color changing display. I'm a fan of top mounted jacks, but I'm not a fan of mini pedals. A strobe tuner would be really handy for setting intonation in my guitars though. I have a couple clip on tuners I never use and a Boss TU-2 as my main tuner. Never really needed to upgrade other than wanting precision for the intionation adjusting.

As far as setting intonation goes, well I'm not convinced we need a super-accurate tuner. My Korg has always been fine. One of my favourite guitars (Gibson ES-225 RI) has a crude steel bar as a bridge and while the intonation is as good as I can get it (ie not very good!) the guitar plays in tune just fine and I have never felt the need to improve it. I guess I have been bummed by intonation on a Gretsch with a bar bridge before though... Thing is when we play we don't always press the strings down perfectly in line, at the same pressure etc etc so intonation becomes a moot point.

But that's another story!

...
When I checked this tuner out, I found that the USB-C does indeed support powering the thing.
I would've preferred the DC-jack up top, so have to agree Peterson still missed the mark on this one. They almost got there...
