MXR Rockman X100

Great news actually. Finally, I'm released from having to think about maybe making some more pedals. I'll stick to my onboard PCB, like my original plan was, and leave pedals to more pedal-oriented people.

I do think MXR missed some opportunities with their new pedal though. There's no ECHO, and I feel they should have maybe made the thing a bit bigger and add another footswitch or two, at least for the MODE switching, if not also for Chorus on/off. And there's no Tone knob, no headphone amp for private practice.... The list goes on. But those who want maximum flexibility and don't mind going down the deep rabbit hole can still get my Rock Engine and make their own creation :cool:


P.S. they could have called it Rock Mania x10, since it draws exactly 10x the current of my Rock Mania pedal 🤣

I've been trying, not very successfully, to get away from it. It's been consuming me (well, on and off, when it comes back into focus). Sucks having OCD.

I agree that MXR/Dunlop's "X100" hat-in-the-ring should have included the "ECHO" effect, a tone control and headphone amp. But they did at least address the "MODE" switching by adding that "CTRL" input jack for an external stomp to cycle thru them.

We're still moving forward because of the following we've developed in a couple of the FB groups. People love the 100% Rockman X100 features in our build with most of the good stuff changeable with stompswitches.

@JTEX, does your Rock Engine have the "ECHO" effect?

It certainly has for our version of the product. The FB groups we troll were hopping about the MXR X100, but disappointed about the lack of "ECHO", direct foot controllable "MODE" switching, and the tone and compression controls.
 
Yeah, I feel that MXR calling the pedal X100 is a bit of a stretch considering the missing features.

Speaking of your FB group, it won't allow me to rejoin, now that I'm back on Facebook. Maybe it's for the better, though. Trying to get away from it all...

I settled on a PT2399 delay in the end. The original ECHO wasn't that great to begin with IMO. I didn't feel it was worth the hassle to recreate it, or the power penalty to go with something like a FV1 (my power budget is very skinny).

I don’t think the pedal is meant to be the pedal version of the OG, it’s more a pedal version of THAT sound…

Good/bad news. I'm still messing around building my stripboard version (no. 2) using Cybercow's corrected Rev 10. schematic, with the Dist/Edge/Clean1/Clean2 portion of the circuit. This time I cheated using the PedalPCB charge pump board to try it with +/-9V, and my output section is not worked out yet, I'm sorting out some white noise in Clean1, etc., etc.

A question for the experts based on playing around with what I have built so far, has anyone else ever tried the X100 distortion through EQ 2 ?? It doesn't sound like a half bad distortion to me, maybe a little towards fuzz, with more bass? I'm assuming all of the portable Rockman's used EQ 1 with the distortion/edge due to the switching arrangement, but maybe the rack units had more flexibility?
