Casting enclosures

We have a thread about sheet metal enclosures and perhaps a separate one about cast enclosures would be useful.
It doesn't matter if it's steel, aluminum, etc.

I'm wondering about the minimum wall thickness, in the case of aluminum and sand castings. Let's say a 125B sized enclosure. 2.5-3mm would be enough?

I would certainly think 2.5mm wall thickness would be perfect! If I’m not mistaken I believe that thicker than the standard 125B enclosures.

Yeah it depends on where you get them and who made them, but most 125B I've seen are 1.5-2mm thick. Looks like Hammond's datasheet calls out 1.6mm thickness.

I have a Fuzzcases Olivetti Supra Fuzz enclosure (which I still need to find some really outstanding germs for!) and the walls are exactly 4mm

I probably would try to stay between 3-4mm for home-casting purposes just because aluminum is very light and if you’re not pouring a high volume, it can be difficult to get full flow in thin spaces. 2mm *should* be fine, but the thinner it is the better chance you have of non-fill. Of course, a failed casting can always be recycled back into a new pour…

I'm afraid it may be enough for die cast enclosures, but a bit thin for sand casted boxes. I'm sure it also depends on the alloy type.

Depending on the size of the enclosure, you've gotta adjust your line-size.
Even then, the line may break and you'll catch no fish.
