This build took me forever get across the finish line. It’s a clone of the Death By Audio Space Ring Flaming Lips pedal. The Flaming Lips “Clouds taste metallic” was the first cd I bought when I was a kid. They obviously didn’t use the Space Ring on that record cuz it didn’t exist yet but I knew I needed to build it anyways. I wasn’t really trying to recreate whatever sound they use the pedal for. I just wanted for sonic explorations. I started this circuit on Vero board a hella long time ago but something wasn’t right so I salvaged the transformers and built it on the DeadendFX Wurmloch PCB. Assembly of the pcb was pretty straightforward but when I first fired it up I could only get half the circuit to work. At that point I figured I would just finish the enclosure and come back and troubleshoot later. In my eagerness to finish as many enclosures as possible, I overlooked the fact that this goes in a 1590c not bb. So when I go to box it, of course there is no room for I/O or power….. DOH. I knew better. But in my infinite wisdom, couldn’t be bothered to double-check build docs. Finally, got it boxed up and started messing around with it to see what was wrong…. No luck, so I put it on the shelf. Next day at work, I had a random epiphany “I bet the footswitches are opposite of what I think they are”…. Boom. Troubleshot. This Space Ring is go for launch.
The sounds this thing makes definitely sets it apart from other ring mods I’ve used. It’s got its own flavor for sure. The distortion it has is very nice too. The artwork is just a cool image I culled from google that seemed fitting. I used boecklins big muff font, Iron Maiden font and an 8-bit looking font for lettering. Zonk knobs from Antique Electronic Supply. Thanks for reading my rambling. Cheers!
