T-REX Binson Echorec

Seriously considering dropping a couple grand on this. T-Rex, which I read was produced in Denmark (I think), has acquired the rights to the name and has re-engineered the original tape delay with a drum. Anyone here have one? List is $2100, but there are some demo units for less. I have the catalinbread echorec but I find it a bit chaotic sounding compared to the youtube demos.

as someone sitting on this particularly bougie fence I feel like the drum is a safer bet compared to like the fulltone tape delay or a vintage unit of any persuasion

I saw it when they announced it at NAMM and ever since have been putting in a considerable amount of effort not to buy one because I know I don't need need it, but it is freaking cool.

It is worth mentioning though that the original Echorec was also a drum-based unit and was never a tape delay.

We effects nerds get it, but "tape delay" is something that a layman might immediately understand. I friggin hate marketing (language); it's the reason I hve a chip on my shoulder over Gørva enclosures.

I was mostly drawing attention to is in reference to this comment:

which is not what happened. The Binson Echorec has never been a tape unit.

Unlike most other electromechanical delays, the Echorec uses an analog magnetic drum recorder instead of a tape loop

I had a TEAC reel to reel back in the 70's, a hand-me-down from a relative. It had multiple playback heads with switches, and a speed selector. Only drawback is it would only record the original signal, the echo's were live playback only. And it was in a custom cabinet with a Harmon Kardon tube stereo, and tube record player. Output was JBL L100. Talk about analog paradise???

Well it lasted till the late 80's and I have never found another solution that had the clarity and awesome analog sound. I like my catalinbread echorec, but it just doesn't have that real mechanical echorec sound.

I know I've seen people with other tape based echorec's looking for repair I just assumed the original Binson was tape as well....

I really wanted to hate the Fulltone tube tape echo because Fulltone but it actually sounded very, very good when a friend lent me one. Not good enough for me to put up with a tape delay but damn - I liked it a lot! If anything though I would like to built the tube preamp in it because that thing sounded amazing. Fantastic overdrive.
