Knives

We're a boys club... So, show me your knives! Which are tools. Which have their place in a DIY community forum.

Top two are for show; don't dare to use them; custom made in Russia. Still love to get the third one with a kukri blade, but the war has made this impossible for now.

The bottom two are used all the time. The left one is a CRKT (picked because of its tanto blade and very fast open/close mechanism). The right one I got from my dad's toolbox. So yeah... Both US made. Both have drawn lots and lots of my blood.

If I could find it, I would have posted that meme with the large SUV and small truck with transport decks. The huge SUV version looks pristine ("don't scratch the deck!") and the small one is the truck that shows its scars, as it's actually being used for what it was made: transport. Show- and workhorse, so to speak.

Anyhow, I bet you guys got some things to show.

I found a butterfly knife at the top of my laundry cupboard when I moved into the house 5 years ago. They're wild illegal here. I didn't really know what to do with it so I just threw it back up there.

Illegal here too. I have a nice Swiss army knife with 100000000 tools (of course the one that can’t be opened with one hand only because the other one is illegal to carry around in the pocket) but it‘s to precious for building pedals. I use a scalpel most of the time.

My EDC was a gift from a friend because real men have a knife in our pocket. If I leave the house it’s in my pocket. I try not to go into places that won’t let me carry but the airport is an exception (although I still carry my POM pepper spray for that nonsense). I use the exacto for pedals and is an aliexpress special I’ve had for a decade now.

I was a knife obsessed child. Then I had a few jobs where it was nice to always have a knife or leatherman handy.



These days if there’s a clip hanging out of my pocket it’s much more likely to be connected to a flashlight.

As a non American, I have literally no idea why you would need to have a knife on your person at any point in my week.
I have a knife in my drawer for opening mail. Then I put it back in the drawer. Sometimes I use scissors for the same job.

Typically just for camping anymore or cutting twine for various projects. One small one I've had since I broke my Leatherman as a scout, and my inherited Old Timer from my grandfather.

Probably right.... Some people are quite offended by them... I do store mine in a large fireproof safe when we aren't physically doing something with them.. I have 4 kids at home that were raised to respect them properly as well. I've taken my 4 boys out with me every chance I get to go hunting and to the range. They have been hunting since they were 5 years old with me and didn't start carrying a weapon until age 14. My oldest son is now 18. I've had 2 weeks off work for the holidays and I have taken my 14 year old out deer hunting several days in a row before Christmas so he can take a few deer for the freezer and we were out wild hog hunting this morning. Plan to go back for hogs several days this week while I'm off.

My two most used and abused- Morakniv 3/4 tang and a Nextool with a useable pair of scissors.

I have a bunch beyond these, mostly low end. I kind of tuck knives around everywhere. Gerber multi tool in the gig bag, Morakniv in the camp gear, Opinel in the disc golf bag etc.

These get regular use. The little CKRT actually goes in the pocket from time to time but I'm no hunter/gatherer, it mostly opens mail. Most of my knives of interest are for cooking. The Shun was a gift from a music collaborator friend. The big ass Ontario knife was inherited from my grandmother. It looks like it's just for spreading but the edge is actually sharp. We used to just call it the sammich knife. It's been surprisingly useful for odd jobs like making noodles and stirring natural peanut butter.

I don't know if it's true but I was told my Pearl Harbor survivor grandfather carried this Solingen during WWII and on up until his death in the mid 90's. He definitely had it on his belt every time I saw him growing up. It's seen some things. I really only carry it for luck on special occasions.
