How I found this rabbit hole....

One thing is for sure the more I learn about this hobby the more I realize how much there is to learn... I started off modding a guitar, then moved to a wah pedal, and now I’m here.

I always thought that effects pedals were way more expensive than they would ever be worth to me. This way I get to try just about any pedal I could want and whether or not it costs me the same amount to make it at home, at the end of the day I had a lot more fun because I actually got to work with my hands on building something and learning something new.

I don't really follow newer pedal releases so I go and check what they are after the pcb gets put up for sale and it is always astonishing to me how much they are! Glad they're out there making cool things and making money doing it but god that stuff gets priiiicey

It was never about the money for me when I started all this - it was always about chasing a sound. Now I have found that I can save rather a lot, so that has become a factor! But it's still about tweaking the sound for me. I reckon pedal designers must always have to keep things generic to appeal to as many players as possible, but I want something more specific.

So, How is the BJFE Model G 5 Knob TMB- 2020 model?

All I wanted to do was repair an old rare 80’s pedal that broke (dried out electrolytics as it turned out) so I bought a pedal kit to get familiar with pcb soldering.

then I discovered the tagboardeffects blog. And FSB, DIY, and this lovely place!

I just put in my first order for stuff to build. It all started when my wife started asking how much my new gear costs and I realized that I love gear so much that I was going to spend an absurd amount on the pedals I wanted.

I spend more money now on building pedals than I ever spent buying them beforehand
But it's piecemeal, so its not noticed as much. as opposed to 400 bucks coming out the account and being attributed to guitar center. lol. I did the same thing with a warmoth guitar build. 50 bucks here and there, and soon I had a whole new guitar

Isn't it beautiful how $400 spaced out to 8 $50 purchases feels like it's nothing :) I don't know how I could build pedals without that

It's funny - I wasn't ever really interested in many pedal effects other than compression, OD, and a little fuzz. But once i learned that I could build them myself in my garage just by following instructions.... I've spent more money in the past 6 or 8 months building them than I spent on pedals in 20+ years of playing bass

Yeah that's the saddest part. I didn't even use pedals when I played in bands
